Merrion Road

Merrion Road

Seemingly small from the roadside, this unexpectedly bright and spacious home meets all the needs of our client.

The original split level terrace house on Merrion Road was compact with a lack of daylight and a poor connection to the generous rear garden, low ceilings on the ground level made the house feel cramped and the central staircase constrained the potential for connection throughout.

The design for this project centred on creating a light and airy modern home while remaining sympathetic to the historic features of the house. A new top lit staircase marks the junction between old and new, improving the circulation flow, flooding both floors with an abundance of daylight and creating a generous sense of space.

To the rear, a new extension accommodates an additional bedroom and bathroom at the upper level with a large open plan kitchen & living area on the lower level with an unobstructed link to the garden. Bi-fold doors open across the dining space to create a seamless transition from inside to the rear patio area and carefully considered placed windows frame views through to the leafy garden beyond.

The expansion to the rear is contemporary in execution but the character of the original house is evident in the layout of the front rooms and the external use of brick on the rear extension is a nod to the historic fabric of the building.
